Pathways to Education - Tutor

The successful candidate requires:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Pathways to Education is a community based program designed to reduce poverty and its effect by lowering the dropout rate amoung high school students from economically disadvantaged communities. The program offers academic, social, financial, and advocacy support to youth in order to increase their opportunity for success in high school and beyond. The North Hamilton CHC is offering it for the first time in September 2009.

The role of the Pathways Tutor is to provide academic support and to engage in positive role modeling for youth during program time.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • To participate consistently in group tutoring sessions.
  • To work both one-to-one and in small groups assisting students with academic tasks/homework.
  • To maintain a positive and upbeat demeanor with all youth.
  • To endeavour to understand the challenges to high school success the participants face.
  • To assist with the organization of special events.
  • To take part in the set-up and clean up of group mentoring sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience and/or an interest in working with youth.
  • General comfort with at least one common grade nine subject area (math, science, English, social science).
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability to problem solve and use common sense.
  • Caring and compassion.
  • Patience and understanding.
  • Cultural sensitivity.
  • Ability to refrain from passing judgment on individuals.

TRAINING

  • An Orientation Session to North Hamilton Community Health Centre and to the Pathways to Education Program.
  • A detailed training session covering issues specific to the Pathways to Education program, including:
    • the history of Pathways
    • skill building mentoring techniques
    • education on self-esteem building in youth
    • the expected duties and responsibilities of volunteers
    • material around youth development and conflict resolution skills
    • coverage of the Centre's Child Abuse Policy

COMMITMENT

  • Participation in, and successful completion of, the initial training.
  • Participation in ongoing training.
  • To be available for a minimum 3 hours every two weeks during the school year (October to June).

  • To give youth a strong support system including positive role modeling, group culture, enhanced learning opportunities and skill building to ensure their success in completing high school with the confidence to continue beyond.
  • To participate consistently in group mentoring sessions.
  • To work in small groups assisting students to gain social skills, new competencies, and personal growth.
  • To maintain a positive and upbeat demeanor with all youth.
  • To endeavour to understand the challenges to high school success the participants face.
  • To assist with the planning of mentoring topics.
  • To assist with the organization of special events.
  • To take part in the set-up and clean up of group mentoring sessions.
