Here's what our current volunteers are saying!

What a few months it has been! From dancing hip-hop and salsa, to learning about Positive Spaces and playing Jeopardy, I’ve had a blast volunteering with Pathways! It’s great being a part of a group that has people of all ages, backgrounds and interests. And the culinary result of the group and our many cook-offs has been nothing short of spectacular! Croissants turned into bruschetta and calzones with the works, and my personal favourite- rice crispy squares à la frosted flakes! Aside from the fun of food and games, I believe the group has learned a lot about working as a team and trying out new things, with or without some friendly persuasion!  Looking forward to whatever adventure awaits us next week!

I wasn’t sure of what to expect at first. I didn’t know what the students would be like, the other volunteers and staff, or the expectations. After attending the initial training sessions, I am impressed with the staff who are very professional and willing to provide any support for the volunteers that is needed. The other volunteers are great individuals who are genuinely interested in helping today’s youth.

Developing trust and friendship takes time and effort, but it is a worthwhile endeavor.  It is a great feeling to help out a student one week and have them ask you a question the following week.  Some days are definitely challenging to keep the students motivated, but the Pathways staff do a great job in developing creative ways to keep the students engaged. The staff and volunteers are actively working together to create an environment  to enhance the students education.

I believe Pathways' integrated approach to providing services for youth can only benefit future generations, and I am proud to be a part of it.

I arrived in Hamilton in September as a university student removed from the city I would live in for the duration of my university stay. Now I am finishing the academic year as part of a larger Hamilton community, and I am a better person because of it. Responsible for my “community education” is the Pathways Mentoring program; a group of staff, volunteers and high school students that creates an atmosphere conducive to somewhat unlikely friendships and gives a sense of unity to otherwise unconnected individuals. After only a few weeks, it was apparent to me that there are few better ways to become acquainted with a group of people than to participate in hip-hop dance lessons and a pizza-making competition with them. It is these experiences that make Mentoring a definite change of pace from sometimes-stressful university life and an invaluable addition to my schedule as a student and community member.

Thanks,
