OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT CLUB

Open to all North End children in grades 1-8. This program provides outdoor education and recreation to children throughout the year. Program is beneficial for increasing environmental awareness, skill building, positive social interaction and hands-on learning.

Location:
Parks Canada Discovery Centre - Multi-purpose room (57 Discovery Dr.)

Meeting Times:
One Saturday a month from 9:30am to 12:00pm

Goals of Program:

  • To engage children in opportunities for experiential learning
  • Use hands-on activities and excursions to educate and connect children with the natural environment
  • Heightened awareness in children and their families about their local environment
  • Build skills in ecological literacy, community building and environmental issues

Description of Program (activities, participants, etc.):

  • The Children's Outdoor and Environmental program started in April 2005 is an expansion of the Children's Garden Club that has been in operation since 1999.
  • Uses activity based programming relating to the outdoors and the environment that includes guest speakers, field trips and community projects.
  • Activities are centred around the Outdoor Environment Program's three themes: Explore, Experience, Care.
    - Explore: Increase knowledge and awareness of ecology and
    environmental issues.
    - Experience: Provide meaningful experiences that connect the children
    to their social and ecological community.
    - Care: Create opportunities for involvement in community projects to help foster a sense of place and belonging for children in their community.
